Hakone’s mountains have long been famous for the diversity of their forests. One outcome is Hakone Yosegi Marquetry, a traditional craft whose history begins in the Edo Period. Its art lies in combining many different types of wood, taking advantages of their different colors to produce items decorated with finely detailed geometric patterns. Complex wooden puzzles are one especially attractive form of Yosegi Marquetry.

Hakone Maruyama Bussan, located in front of what was once the Hakone barrier on the Tokaido, the highway connecting Kanto and Kansai, specializes in production and sale of Yosegi Marquetry. At the workshop, after watching the craftsmen at work, visitors are invited to try an only-in-Hakone experience, making their own “secret boxes” with hidden compartments. Making your own box with its own unique tricks is one of the highlights of a visit to Hakone. Here, too, you can purchase the many famous marquetry items produced by the experienced craftsmen who have dedicated their lives to their craft.
